Arugampul is endowed with excellent medicinal properties and has been used in villages of India from time immemorial to treat various diseases. Siddha and Ayurveda systems use Bermuda grass in preparing various concoctions.
In South India Arugampul is regarded as “Holy herb” or “Wonder herb” along with Holy Basil and Neem.  Arugampul is the herb of Lord Ganesha, the Hindu God whom people worship before starting anything important.
Bermuda grass grows in mostly all types of soil. Because of its wide spread roots, the grass does not perish in any adverse climatic condition. It is quite difficult to pull out the grass complete from ground. It is a highly agressive species, crowding out most other grasses, leading it to be called “Devil’s grass” in some areas. Farmers regard this grass as a weed and pluck them out whenever they find them in their paddy fields.

Principle Constituents:
The plant contains crude proteins, carbohydrates and mineral constituents, oxides of magnesium, phosphorous, calcium, sodium and potassium. The whole plant affords sitosterol and carotene. Other compounds like vitamin C, cartone, palmitic acid, triterpenoides, alkaloids ergonovine and ergonovinine etc. are reported. Green grass contains Protein- 10.47%, Enzymes-28.17% and total ash- 11.75%.
The Ash contains Calcium- 0.77 %, Phosphorus- 0.58%, Manganese- 0.34%, Sodium- 0.23% and Potassium- 2.08%.
Medicinal uses:
§                     Arugampul helps in detoxifying your body.  Take juice of Arugampul every morning on empty stomach.  It helps in removing toxins from your body.
§                     Boil Arugampul 10 gm, white pepper 2 gm, in 50 ml water and reduce it to 25 ml.  Allow this preparation to cool and add a spoon of butter.  This preparation can be taken to treat Anal itch, Urinary tract infection, painful urination and side effects of medicines etc.
§                     Arugampul is useful as a general tonic as well as an aphrodisiac.
§                     A paste made from Arugampul and Turmeric can be applied on skin to treat problems like Scabies, Eczema etc.  Regular application is found to cure the Eczema and Scabies.
§                     Make a paste of Arugampul and mix it in a cup of yoghurt (curd).  Women suffering from white discharge can benefit from this; they can take this for a week for complete cure.
§                     Juice obtained from Arugampul can be used as eye drops to cure eye irritation.  When applied on fresh wounds it helps the blood to clot fast.  It helps in healing old wounds too.
§                     As a potent styptic, Arugampul effectively arrests the bleeding in Dysentery, Piles, Haematuria, Epistaxis, Menorrhagia, Diarrhea, etc.
§                     Arugampul checks the Uterine bleeding, strengthens the Uterus, averts the abortion and augments the foetal growth.
In SIDDHA medicine:
§                     Arugampul juice is applied on eyes for eye diseases, nose for Epistasis & wound area for wound healing.
§                     Arugampul & Manjal mixed and grinded & applied for Skin diseases, it is very useful.
§                     Root of Arugampul reduces body temperature & cures the tridosha diseases.
§                     Arugan thylum is very much useful for Skin diseases.
§                     Arugampul’s root decoction is useful for Urinary infections & Piles.
§                     Arugampul’s root is powdered & mixed with curd, it is useful for Leucorrhea.
Other Uses:
§                     Arugampul is used for environmental purposes (erosion control; lawn/turf), animal food (fodder; forage).

Turmeric (Manjal, Haldi) – Curcuma longa

Turmeric “the golden spice of life” is one of most essential spice used as an important ingredient in culinary all over the world. Turmeric is a tropical plant perennial herbs, curcuma domestically cultivated in India since ancient time. As early as 3000 B.C., the turmeric plants were cultivated by Harappan civilization. Turmeric belongs to ginger family Zingiberaceae.
This yellow spice with subtle flavor is called turmeric powder obtained from dried grounded underground stem “rhizome”.  The rhizome of the turmeric is yellowish orange tuberous juicy stem. The outer part of rhizome is covered with segmented yellowish brown color. Turmeric is a strong dyeing agent creating permanent stain on cloths with just drop of turmeric juice from rhizome.

Common Uses:
In India, Turmeric is used as a medicine to reduce the possibility of infection caused by cuts, burns, and bruises. It is used to treat a wide variety of ailments including stomachache, skin problems, muscular problems and arthritis. Turmeric has been used for relief from Bronchitis, diarrhoea, intermittent fever, abnormal accumulation of the liquid in cellular tissue, Jaundice, liver and urinary disorders. Arthritis, muscular aches and pains, rheumatism. Anorexia, sluggish digestion.
Principle Constituents:
The principle constituent of turmeric is Curcumin, which is a diferuloyl methane. Other constituents are curcuminoids and an essential oil called zingiberine. Its chemical study shows that it contains proteins, carbohydrates and fibre. Its mineral and vitamin contents are calcium, phosphorus, iron, carotene, thiamine and niacin.
Medicinal uses:
§                     Anti-oxidant, Anti-platelet, Anti-viral, Anti -fungal, Anti -bacterial effects (inhibits Helicobacter Pylori).
§                     Arthritis: anti-inflammatory effects, not only does it not care ulcers but is currently being used experimentally as a treatment for ulcers in western countries.
§                     Inhibits formation of, and breaks down, Amyloid-beta oligomers and aggregates in rodents;
§                     Anti-Tumor effects: causes apoptosis in various cancer cell types including skin, colon, fore stomach, duodenum and ovary in the laboratory.
§                     Anti-diabetic effects in rodents.
In SIDDHA medicine:
§                     Manjal is powdered and sprayed to the wounds, for cure.
§                     Manjal with Veppillai (Neem) make into paste and applied to the chicken pox for curing the Vesicles and Smallpox ulcers.
§                     When Manjal treated with fire, the fumes come out from the Manjal is inhaled, which is useful for sinusitis (running nose).
§                     The powder form of Manjal is useful for treating the ulcers.
§                     Manjal is mixed with water & applied over the body, which is helpful for bad smell in the body.
§                     Manjal is useful for treating the skin diseases.
§                     Manjal water is very much used for eye diseases.

Herbal Medicine for Arthritis

How effective is boswellia for arthritis ??

According to a randomized double blind placebo controlled crossover study conducted to assess the efficacy, safety and tolerability of Boswellia serrata extract, patients receiving boswellia reported decrease in knee pain, increased knee flexion and increased walking distance. The frequency of swelling in the knee joint was decreased. Although  there was no change radiologically, Boswellia significantly reduced the degradation of glycosaminoglycans when compared to controls . Boswellia serrata extract was well tolerated by the subjects except for minor gastrointestinal symptoms.
